A gorgeous, sunny afternoon was spent on the Jack Nicklaus designed Great Waters golf course as four Reynolds golf aficionados played their last round at Great Waters before its complete restoration by 18-time major golf champion Jack Nicklaus.  Lon Grundy, Rick Dodd, Wes Forester, and Ryan MacNeill enjoyed camaraderie and competition on a course that has been  delighting golfers since 1992, and there’s no doubt it will continue to do soafter Nicklaus’s finishing touches.

“It’s always fun to bring a friend here for the first time and see the look on their face when we hit the back nine,” says Lon Grundy, General Manager of Reynolds Lake Oconee. It was certainly bittersweet for the four to know that one of their favorite courses would  be unavailable to play , but just as one looks forward to the upgrade of a new home, the golfers agreed that the excitement over a newer, more spectacular course overshadows any sentimentality.

Forester, the current Director of Golf, and MacNeill, the Head Golf Professional at Great Waters, discussed how the restoration will  excite Reynolds Lake Oconee Members and guests alike with a full turf replacement including Zoysia fairways, re-shaping of the greens, full bunker restoration, re-positioning tee boxes and more.

Rick Dodd, the first Director of Golf at Reynolds, reminisced on playing the opening round at Great Waters with Nicklaus. “It was a great honor to play the course with its creator back in 1992, it’s a pleasure to play today, and I certainly look forward to playing Nicklaus’ new creation!”

The restoration is scheduled to take approximately 15 months with the grand re-opening in the Fall of 2019. Nicklaus and his award-winning Nicklaus Design Team will head up the restoration led by Design Associate Chad Goetz. As a member of both the American Society of Golf Course Architects and the European Institute of Golf Course Architects, Goetz carries these 18 holes in his capable and competent hands. Great things are worth the wait here at Great Waters at Reynolds Lake Oconee.
