Jason Plazola, Director of Food and Beverage at Reynolds Lake Oconee, recently gathered fifty members of his service team for routine training on wines, but the class would prove to be anything but ordinary.

Janet Trefethen was their teacher for the day. As an owner and founding family member of Trefethen Family Vineyards in Napa Valley and one of the industry’s first female executives, she knows a thing or two about wine.

“This class was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the ladies and gentlemen of our service team to sit directly with a Napa Valley icon and learn from the best of the best,” said Plazola. “The ability for our team to learn in-person from Janet Trefethen about these world-class wines and history will no doubt inspire them to bring that story directly to our Members and throughout our restaurants and special events.”

Trefethen discussed the history and flavor profiles of several of the vineyard’s wines. She also had her pupils taste through five of the winery’s signature varietals including Napa Valley Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Dry Riesling so they would be well-equipped to provide guidance to Members on recommended pairings when dining.

“It was special for me to present my family’s wines and tell our story to this group at Reynolds,” said Trefethen. “I hope I left them with fresh and invigorating information along with confidence when presenting these wines to diners.”

Abuzz with excitement, the team left a truly one-of-a-kind educational experience ready to pour their next glass of wine with the enthusiasm of a true vintner.
